Do you feel self-conscious about fang-like “vampire teeth?” Fortunately, transforming your smile is easier than ever today thanks to advancements in cosmetic dentistry treatments. At Shining Smiles Family Dentistry in Marietta, we regularly speak with patients who are generally happy with their smiles, but want to fix some imperfections. Here are some of the treatments we recommend for fixing so-called vampire teeth.
What Are Vampire Teeth?
Vampire teeth are just human canine teeth that are extra pointy and sharp. The human mouth contains four types of teeth – incisors, molars, premolars and canines. Canine teeth are the longest of these types, and are primarily used for tearing food. Their appearance is also genetically predetermined.
Crooked or long and sharp vampire teeth can leave many people dissatisfied with their smile, particularly as the canines have such a prominent position in the mouth. But thankfully, whether you want a minor fix or a complete smile makeover, you can choose from several cosmetic dentistry treatments to help.
Cosmetic Treatments for Fixing Vampire Teeth
Porcelain Veneers
If you want customized teeth that are the size, shape and color of your choice, porcelain veneers are a great option. A dentist will shave down the enamel of the existing teeth and add thin porcelain veneers that have been custom-made. Patients have the option to add veneers for just their vampire teeth, or may include the surrounding teeth as well. As we have previously discussed, porcelain veneers are usually a better choice than Lumineers®.
Tooth Bonding
Dental tooth bonding is a popular option for fixing cracked and chipped teeth, but it can also be used to fix sharp canine teeth. Tooth-colored resin is applied to the canine teeth to change their shape and structure. This non-invasive process is a useful option when you only want to make small changes.
Invisalign
Due to the position of many vampire teeth, Invisalign® is not always an appropriate solution. However, after a check-up your dentist can advise you whether or not using clear aligner technology is a viable option. In some cases, dentists use Invisalign when the canines are not too high, but could benefit from repositioning. Alternatively, Invisalign treatment could start after metal braces have been used to create some initial tooth movement.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be a good solution if you have small, pointy vampire teeth. In this instance, patients may be more concerned with the shape of the tooth rather than the size. Therefore, a dental crown can be placed over the tooth to produce a preferred shape. Unlike porcelain veneers which are applied to the front of the tooth, a dental crown covers the entire tooth.
