At some point in your life, you’ve probably heard a friend or family member mention having to go the dentist to get a dental crown or bridge.
You know they had some dental work done, but what exactly?
If you’re interested in dental crowns or a dental bridge, you should find this page very helpful.
We’re going to go into further detail regarding what a dental crown is, what a dental bridge is, how they both work, and the problems they can fix.
What are crowns and bridges?
Unlike dentures which can be removed, crowns and bridges are permanent. Crowns and bridges are typically made from porcelain, thus providing a solid, strong, and stable foundation.
In most cases, they are either placed directly over an old tooth, or they are placed with an abutment on top of a recently placed dental implant.
Either way, a set of crowns or a dental bridge can improve the function, feel, and aesthetics of your mouth.
What problems do crowns and bridges correct?
You’re here because you have a specific dental problem that needs to be addressed. If you have one of the following issues with your teeth, a dental crown or bridge may be the perfect option to help you fix your cracked, chipped, broken, or lost teeth.
Crowns and bridges can:
Protect a tooth that is showing signs of weakness or stress from fracturing.
Replace a filling where there isn’t enough tooth remaining
Restore a tooth that is chipped, cracked, or broken
Cover a tooth that has become discolored due to trauma or decay
Cover an odd-shaped tooth
Cover a dental implant after restoration
In layman’s terms, if you have a tooth that doesn’t look or feel right, and you would like it to be restored (both for your oral health, and your self-confidence) then a dental crown or bridge could be the ideal option for you.
When should I get a dental crown vs. a bridge?
After your evaluation, your dentist will be able to recommend the best course of care to receive the outcome you desire. That may include both crowns and bridges, or it may include neither.
At Shining Smiles Family Dentistry in Marietta, we always base our recommendations on what is best for the patient. We treat you as if you are our own mother, brother or sister sitting right across from us in the dental chair; we only want what is best for you, your oral health, and your self-confidence.
We can tell you that typically a crown is used to improve the shape, appearance, or functionality of a single tooth. If you have multiple teeth side by side that need crowns, a dental bridge may be the best option for you.
How are crowns and bridges made?
When it comes to making a crown or bridge, there are two aspects that are extremely important; color and fit. You obviously don’t want a crown that is too loose and may become detached, and you also do not want a crown (especially if it shows when you smile) that doesn’t match the color of the rest of your teeth.
At Shining Smiles, we take great care to ensure that both of these requirements are met. Once you and our team are on the same page that a dental crown or bridge is the right option for you, we will likely have to shave off some of your tooth enamel in order to secure a crown over the top of it.
If you have recently received dental implants, then your crowns or bridge will be placed on an abutment that is attached to the top of your dental implant.
After your teeth are prepared for crowns or a bridge, impressions are taken and a color match is performed to ensure that your crowns will fit perfectly and blend in with the surrounding teeth.
Receiving a crown or bridge requires visiting a dentist who is experienced in this field. At Shining Smiles, Dr. Shaila Mohip and her team have restored many patients’ smiles with crowns or bridges, so if you are in or around Marietta and choose to go that route, you’ll be in great hands here!
Will they last a long time?
It all comes down to good oral hygiene. Your crowns or dental bridge should last 20+ years, but they do occasionally become loose after years of wear and tear, and when this happens it’s important to schedule an appointment with our office so that we can fix the issue as soon as possible.
Always remember that it’s important to visit our practice every six months for your routine cleaning! This will help keep your gums and teeth healthy and happy!
